Certain
themes, and techniques related to their expression,
are beginning to evolve in my work. Paramount among
these are the relationships and tensions between nature
and technology, and between the spiritual and material
dimensions in mankind. The materials and methods I use
in my work are bound up closely with these themes. It
is important to me that the materials used, such as
product packaging as a ground for the paintings, and
everyday objects as a basis for the sculptures, are
transformed, opening up alternatives, new areas of feeling
and ideas.
My method for making paintings has been to use techniques
which encourage the possibilities for improvisation,
where conditions are fertile for new discoveries and
the potential is there to move in altogether unexpected
directions. This has been achieved primarily through
the paintings being constructed of panels of museum-board,
which, while the painting is being worked on, can be
moved around, cut to different sizes, painted over or
discarded ( perhaps to appear in another painting!).
