Artist's Statement

East meets west series

The rich sensuous eastern culture profoundly influences my visual vocabulary. The duality of east and west is referenced in my paintings by combining the florid sensual wallpaper of William Morris with the erotic imagery of Indian temple sculpture.

Whilst the density of detail in my work often obscures any explicit sexuality the figures remain a subversive elements in the otherwise purely decorative repeating patterns of their western derivatives. My work is extremely labour intensive, the constant working, repetition and constant focusing required to make the work acts for me like a visual mantra.
