My work
is about the effect of time on and in the landscape,
the evocation of the seasons and my close encounters
with them, the buildings, the objects both man-made
and natural, the tactile quality of stone, wood, metal,
paint, water and the earth formed by the elements over
time. I am also excited by the marks left in the landscape
by man, such as the ploughed field, footmarks in the
sand, stone circles or the machine cut hedge. I use
colour like a major or minor key in music, suggesting
and reflecting the mood of my subject matter.
I never quite know what is going to happen to my work
when I start a piece. The images often go through many
changes over a long period with shapes moving and colours
changing. I only slowly find the solutions to the problems
I set myself. My interest in photography has helped
me see more closely the shapes that are made by constant
movement, as in the sky, water, fire and earth.
