John Loker
was born in Leeds in 1938. He studied graphic design
at Bradford College of Art & Design (1954-58) and
painting at the Royal College of Art (1960-1963). He
lives and works in Norfolk, U.K. John has had numerous
solo exhibitions in the UK and Europe and has shown
regularly at Flowers East, London and the Wetering Galerie,
Amsterdam since 1970. His participation in group shows
is extensive and he is represented in many public collections
including the Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum,British
Council and Power Institute, Sydney.
John's recent work has incorporated elements and images
such as the whale's tail, the wiper and rocket debris
in the desert. These can be likened to icons on a computer
screen - click and they open. Loker comments: "Painting
is like clicking, to open up the potential and take
the images beyond the literal". John's current
series is entitled "Rolling Closure", a term
used in cycle racing to describe the way in which a
route is closed to traffic as a race approaches and
opened as it passes, thereby causing minimal disruption.
"Rolling Closure" seems to parallel the idea
of constantly moving forward and digging deeper into
an experience and is fast becoming my working title"
says John.
