My work
is both organic and archaeological, drawing its inspiration
from natural forms like seed pods and primitive finds
such as earth goddesses and arrow heads.
With the Goddess theme, I started with the idea of
a small talisman or ritualistic object, something that
might have been concealed in a pocket or hidden in a
cave. As the idea has developed, my pieces have become
more sophisticated, combining the imagery of mystical
female forms with the simple angular planes and taut
lines of arrow heads and spears.
Most of my pieces are ceramic, some are simply burnished
and others smoke fired. I love the process of firing,
of transformation and of the qualities that direct contact
with fire can give to the surface of the clay. After
firing I continue to develop an idea by adding other
materials.
In addition to my ceramic forms I have also explored
new materials, including cast lead crystal, bronze and
carved wood to express my ideas.
