| My work is
a continuous process of exploring the capabilities of
steel, investigating its qualities, and using them to
implement ideas. Focusing on forging tube and sheet steel
rather than more traditional solid bar has enabled me
to develop a particular language in metal.
All the objects on display are hot forged from mild
steel, mostly hammered by hand. This process produces
wonderfully subtle colour variations ranging from blue
to browns, purples and deep reds, as well as beautiful
surface textures. The objects are finished with wax
to preserve the texture and colour and prevent natural
rusting.
The human body provides inspiration for many of my
sculptural forms influencing the shape, as well as the
incorporation of holes, folds and crevices. Surface
texture is an important aspect of my work. Skin and
leather are used as a reference, with their subtle variations
in texture - sometimes smooth, sometimes rough, pimply
or scarred - being reflected in my work. I hope you
enjoy looking at them (and feeling them) as much as
I enjoyed making them.
