Looking
to the future, with the roots of traditional chair making,
Alun Heslop designs dynamic, striking and theatrical
sculptural chairs and seating installations. Exploring
new ways of how seating can exist with a sympathetic
human/nature bond and a tangible link to the origin
of the living wood from the tree to the final form.
Re-interpreting a sense of the traditional within new
forms and contemporary designs to create a sophisticated
yet subtle, attractive simplicity. With a working approach
that envelops the beauty of the natural form to work
with the flow and the character of the wood, utilizing
the whole strength of the grain. Structural integrity,
comfort and superior function are unified into a pure,
sublime aesthetic derived from the natural inner beauty
of the living tree and with the warmth and tactile feel
that only wood can give.
Having been self taught in the craft of chair making
using many traditional English chair making techniques,
constructing Windsor and Welsh style chairs, spinning
stools and frame chair types for some years, Alun began
to expand the realms of traditional chair making to
encompass new and dynamic forms. He believes a chair
should be comfortable and functional for its purpose,
as well as being an aesthetically pleasing object of
beauty.
